Today is Day Zero: Blast off for Comments!

Thank you for participating in our Countdown Campaign for Comments on the Greenidge facility's Title V Air Permit Renewal. TODAY, FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19TH,  IS YOUR LAST DAY TO COMMENT AND URGE OTHERS TO MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD.

There's a lot at stake. The thriving agriculture and wine industry in the Finger Lakes depends on clean air and water. Reviving and expanding a power plant on the shores of Seneca Lake is no longer consistent with what generations have spent building: a community that has been working its way off fossil fuels since 2015, when FLX Wine Country earned the Solar Champion Award from the Solar Energy Industry Association.

The Finger Lakes has moved beyond the industrial nature of our past to create a world-renowned wine region, suitable for recognition as an American Viticultural Area and worthy of consideration by Congress as a National Heritage Designation. Air emissions and pollutants from gas-fired power plants are harmful to crops, particularly grapes. Greenidge is not consistent with the community character of the region and could threaten our way of life.

But the impacts of mining virtual cryptocurrency in a power plant that is projected to emit over 1 Million tons of Co2 equivalents annually doesn't just hurt one of New York's and America's national treasures. Renewing the Greenidge Title V Air Permit will tell us how serious Governor Hochul and the NY Department of Environmental Conservation is about our Climate Law. It will tell us what the future of other underutilized or decommissioned power plants throughout the state may be.

In a recent Assembly Hearing on Proof of Work cryptocurrency (the kind commonly used to mine Bitcoin), Cornell Professor Tony Ingraffea compared the emissions from the Greenidge plant to that of all of the people in Tompkins County for one year. That's approximately 100,000 people.

This is not the right direction for New York.

Please, on this final day of the comment period for Greenidge, let's tell Governor Hochul's DEC that we want clean air and a bold climate initiative for New Yorkers. Let's work together to leave a livable planet for our children.
