Outrageous. Two Meetings on the Landfill scheduled this week

We know how difficult it is to plan on attending one evening meeting in a week let alone two, and perhaps that is exactly why the Seneca Falls Town Board scheduled a meeting to review the Town's revised Comprehensive Plan the day before the already publicized public input meeting scheduled by the landfill.

Here's what is happening:

First Meeting:

Wednesday 9/20: Public Forum on the Seneca Falls Draft Comprehensive Plan
Seneca Falls Community Center- 35 Water Street, 6:00 pm

The Comprehensive plan draft was released at the Town Board meeting this month, and some say it does not accurately reflect the outcry of opposition by Seneca Falls residents to the landfill's expansion and continued operation beyond its planned closure date in 2025. What is your vision for the future of Seneca Falls?  Does it include continued operation of the landfill?

If you can't attend, please send an email to the Town Clerk, asking her to share your concerns with the Town Board: ngreer@senecafalls.com

Sample email:

Dear Ms. Greer,

Please share this email with the members of the Town Board.

I urge the Town Board not to rush a vote on the Draft Comprehensive Plan until the public has had an opportunity to review the plan and comment.  I am requesting that there be more public input meetings scheduled in the coming months, and ample time for public input before this draft comprehensive plan is adopted.

Thank you,

Second Meeting:

Thursday, 9/21: Public Forum by Seneca Meadows
Seneca Falls Community Center- Gymnasium 35 Water Street, 6:00 pm

Waste Connections is hosting a public meeting at the Seneca Falls Community Center Gymnasium to discuss its plans to expand New York’s largest landfill. If permitted, Seneca Meadows (SMI), which already stands 30 stories tall, would grow another seven stories and continue to pollute our region until 2040.

This is your chance to tell the landfill and the Department of Environmental Conservation whether you think the landfill should expand and continue operating through 2040, rather than close in 2025, and is part of a requirement for SMI's  Public Participation Plan (PPP), since the surrounding areas have been deemed disadvantaged communities by the DEC. They held the first meeting in the middle of the week in the middle of the day, when most people were working.

We urge you to attend and sign up to speak!

Before going in, we invite you all to gather outside the Community Center in Seneca Falls 35 Water St, Seneca Falls, NY 13148 at 5:30 pm on September 21st, to let this Texas corporation know that we will not allow them to ruin the health of our economy, environment and neighbors without a fight. We must stand together to protect Seneca Falls. The meeting begins at 6:00 pm.
