Please Sign on and Share Widely: Shut Seneca Meadows Landfill in 2025!

We hope this note finds you well and renewed for 2022! Seneca Lake Guardian is working on many fronts to preserve and protect the Finger Lakes region.

One of our major concerns is the growing amount of trash at the northern gateway to the Finger Lakes: Seneca Meadows Landfill (SMI). This landfill accepts 6,000 tons of garbage a day from 47 counties in New York, in addition to 4 other states and Canada. The odors, truck traffic, horrible viewscape, leachate that goes into our waterways and more is bad for immediate and surrounding communities, and bad for the Finger Lakes’ Brand as a growing agricultural and tourist destination.

We invite you to sign on to a letter to Governor Hochul, urging her to close Seneca Meadows Landfill in 2025 as planned.  Despite her Department of Environmental Conservation telling SMI to close within the next 3 years, and a Local Law is echoing the same, SMI has applied for a continuation through 2040 with a 70-foot increase of garbage atop their already existing mountain of trash.

When you're finished, please share this request with those you know. Deadline to sign is Friday, January 21st by close of business.

Let’s work together, keeping the Finger Lakes region’s air and water clean, drawing in sustainable jobs with families who want to raise their children in a healthy environment, and welcoming visitors from around the world to a destination rich with natural beauty.
